Case

UTM Builder, one taxonomy the whole team shares

A tool that makes correct UTM tagging the easy choice: fixed menus, automatic normalisation and a taxonomy every organisation shapes around its own business, and shares with the whole team.

The tool below is the live version. Everything is stored locally in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere.

UTM Builder, one taxonomy the whole team shares

The challenge

  • UTM tagging almost always drifts. As soon as more than one person builds links, in-house, agency, consultants, everyone guesses slightly differently.
  • The data in GA4 and the CRM turns dirty: rows are duplicated, campaigns land in the wrong place, and you end up cleaning up in Excel instead of trusting the numbers.
  • Ready-made templates don't solve it, because every organisation has its own channels and systems, and therefore its own standard.

Strategy & approach

  1. Built a tool where correct tagging is the easy choice: fixed menus instead of free text, and automatic normalisation of case, spaces and special characters.
  2. The taxonomy is fully open, each organisation adds its own channels and systems, such as its CRM or email platform, and defines its own UTM standard.
  3. Preset channels make a link for Meta, newsletter or partner take seconds, with the right source and medium from the start.
  4. The entire configuration is exported as a file and imported by the next person, so the same standard is shared with agencies, consultants and colleagues without accounts, logins or a new vendor.
  5. Built links are stored in a history that can be exported to CSV and placed next to the campaign plan.
  6. Everything runs in a single HTML file in the browser, with no backend. It can live on the intranet, in a shared folder or locally.

Try the UTM Builder

Build a link, add your own source or channel and export the taxonomy as JSON. Everything is stored locally in your browser.

Fewer

Shareable

Shared standard

The USP is that the tool adapts to the business rather than the other way around: local adjustments are added once and then shared with the whole team. The result is reports you can trust, an honest picture of which channels drive sales, and automated flows that trigger correctly.

Learnings

  • Data quality is rarely an analysis problem, but is decided the moment the link is created.
  • A tool that forces a fixed standard gets bypassed; a tool where the team sets its own standard gets used.
  • Sharing the configuration as a file gets agencies and consultants onto the same standard in a minute.
  • Tools: HTML/JavaScript in a single file, built together with Claude.
